The ZEFES coffeebreak with Özcan Gül from Ford Otosan

Özcan joined Ford Otosan in 2008 and has worked on several combustion engine subsystem and engine system development projects for global Ford vehicle lines. Since 2022, he has worked as a project lead for several fuel cell and fuel cell electric vehicle projects at Ford Otosan.

What was your original motivation to become a researcher/project manager?
I studied mechanical engineering with passion and have been deeply involved in the automotive industry since my master program. This field is incredibly dynamic and constantly evolving, ensuring that no two days are ever the same. I thrive on the challenge of learning new technologies, finding innovative solutions to complex problems, and meticulously organising and executing tasks. The fast-paced, high-pressure environment really excites me.

What is your (main) research area today?
The automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation, with the ambition for zero emissions at the forefront. Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) technologies are our primary focus, especially hydrogen (H2) and battery technologies. While continuing all our development activities, we stay vigilant to all market updates to ensure our products are timely and relevant.

What is the main focus of your team in ZEFES?
In the ZEFES project, our goal is to develop a Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) tractor and deploy it in three different use cases across Turkey, Italy, and Austria. Each work package within the project is crucial as the experiences and data collected will significantly improve our products and facilitate a successful commercial launch, thus advancing the heavy-duty ZEV market.

From all your activities within the project, what are you the most proud of/keen to share with the public?
I am immensely proud of our dedicated and enthusiastic team committed to making a positive impact on the planet. Our collective efforts in developing ZEVs aim to replace polluting diesel vehicles, offering a vastly improved user experience and contributing to a cleaner, greener future.

How do you expect the ZEFES results will impact your organisation and the transport sector in Europe?
The ZEFES project presents an excellent opportunity to collaborate with diverse partners, sharing and discussing solutions for the real-world adaptation of ZEVs. For us, collecting data from real-world usage and listening to user feedback before mass production is crucial. Beyond vehicle development, ensuring seamless end-to-end deployment is essential. I am confident that the ZEFES project will facilitate a smooth transition from diesel to zero-emission vehicles, bringing significant benefits to both our organisation and the European transport sector.
